The mission of the Captains is to recognize those who uphold the honor and traditions of Estill County, Kentucky, USA. Invitation to the ranks of the Order will be made to individuals who have gone to great lengths to serve Estill County or its people and to individuals who are Estill Countians by birth, residence, or occupation who have accomplished some great individual feat worthy of recognition.
The Honorable Order of Estill County Captains was born from a need identified during the 2009 community development project called EC2 – Planning 2day for Estill County’s 2morrow. Several of the EC2 participants realized that Estill County does not have enough opportunities to recognize those who give back to the community. With this in mind, the Captains were born. Anyone who is an Estill Countian by birth, occupation, or residency is eligible for induction into the Order. Nominations may be made by anyone via this website or by contacting the office of the Estill Development Alliance (606-723-2450), a nonprofit community and economic development organization that oversees the Honorable Order.
Upon induction as a Captain, the honoree’s information will be publicly available on this website. The honoree will receive an Honorable Order patch, lapel pin, and an award document signed by the Executive Director of Estill Development Alliance (as the overseeing organization) and the Estill County Judge-Executive, Mayor of Irvine, or Mayor of Ravenna, depending on the accomplishment being honored.
No more than 10 honorees may be inducted in any given month, and induction is reserved for individuals.
The official seal of the Honorable Order is explained as follows:
- The term “Captains” is in honor of Captain James Estill, for whom Estill County was named.
- The center of the seal features a Kentucky Long Rifle crossed with an eighteenth century officer’s saber, to represent Estill County’s pioneer heritage and the resilient nature of its people, as well as honor the service in defense of our nation by Estill Countians past and present.
- The “1808″ signifies the year Estill was founded as a county, from parts of Clark and Madison.
- The fifty encircling stars represent the patriotism of Estill Countians and that the county was 50th in order of formation.
