From the official Estill County Public Library Newsletter:

The Numbers
Between February 1st and April 30th:
11701 visits to the library were recorded.
27067 items were checked out.
1609 people attended library story times, daycare story times, home school enrichment, and children’s bookmobile programs.
670 canned goods were donated in lieu of library fines.

What’s new?
In early March the library began to offer homework help and job help through a company called Brainfuse. The service provides online practice tests, skill building sessions, live tutoring, and resume/writing review.

Patrons can now be placed on a waiting list for select future bestselling books by phone, online, or in person. A list of authors and titles can be found in the new book section of the library.

Two new Early Literacy Stations are up and running in the Children’s section of the library. The stations feature bright and engaging educational games for children from 2 to 10 years of age. Animal themed headphones are also available for check out.

All patrons who wish to participate will be given a business-sized “Preferred Reader/Viewer Card”. Once a patron checks out 10 items, they can redeem this card for a “Fines Free Card.” The “Fines Free Card” can be used at any time in the future to pay off library fines.

Classes are open to residents of Powell, Estill, and Lee Counties
COURSES:
* Accounting Fundamentals – Learn the basics of business finance, including budgets, profit and loss statements, understanding cash flow and more. Dates: Mar. 17 – Apr. 21 Cost: $15
*Customer Service and Marketing – Learn customer service, sales, marketing, and advertising a small business. Dates: May 12 – Jun. 9 Cost: $15

Classes will meet once a week on Thursday evenings from 6pm-8pm and a catered meal will be provided by Hood’s Country Cookin’, Stanton, KY for each class.

Leadership LEAP (Lee, Estill And Powell)

The Beattyville Lee County Chamber of Commerce, Estill County Chamber of Commerce and Powell County Kiwanis Club is pleased to announce an upcoming program to benefit our communities. Leadership LEAP (Lee, Estill and Powell) is a eight month class, made up of people from our three communities, which aims to expand the network of potential future leaders of our counties; enhance participants’ knowledge of the structure and operation of local businesses, schools, healthcare providers, government, civic and charitable organizations; introduce the participants to local business owners, educators and school administrators, healthcare providers and staff, government officials and the leaders of civic and charitable organizations; foster a better understanding of local issues and needs; and develop leadership and team building skills.

The program includes two overnight trips and eight day-long sessions between January and October. All meals and accommodations will be included. Tuition is $200.00, which may be paid by participants or a sponsor/employer. A limited number of scholarships are available, so all interested people are encouraged to apply.

Leadership LEAP is meant for those who want to be more involved in improving our community. Class size is limited and applications are due December 31, 2010. Leadership LEAP is brought to you through a partnership between the Beattyville Lee County Chamber of Commerce, Estill Development Alliance, Estill County Chamber of Commerce, and the Powell County Kiwanis Club.
